I was illegally arrested and subsequently intimidated and harassed by the Rio Dell Police. I had never spent much time here in this town, and was visiting a friend for the holidays from Eureka.
On Thanksgiving a Maintenance Man at the apartments my friend stayed at off Rigby Ave. approached my friends 6 year old daughter, alone, while it was getting dark at the playground, and began talking with her about her dog.
I heard about this and confronted him. He acted very nervous and guilty and this was extremely concerning to me. I made it very clear he was not to talk to her alone under any circumstances.
20 minutes later the Maintenance Man came to my friends apt. and began berating her in front of several neighbors yelling that she was going to be kicked out.
The next night the Maintenance Man called his friends at the Rio Dell Police Department and let them into my friends apt. I was alone in the house working in the back office and was greeted by a Rio Dell Police officer with a gun in face.
I was arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest.
When I was released from Humboldt County Jail and arrived at the police station to recover my property I was met by the Rio Dell chief of police and a sergeant. They told by the sergeant that I was not allowed to go back to the apartment complex, and I was told by the Chief that "if I kept walking around town I was going to keep getting arrested."
When I arrived back at the apartment complex to finish my holiday vacation with my friend, the Chief of police, the sergeant, and the maintenance man were waiting for me.
They bullied me off the property.
I walked back to the police department and was told the only way to get a police report was to be a lawyer, and that I was not allowed to file a police report.
I am now talking to the Humboldt County District Attorney's office. I have faith that they will make me whole, and support our community growth project, #TheSerendipityCenter. My suggestion to those who might have had a bad experience with Rio Dell Police or any police, is don't give officers a hard time, explain your situation calmly and likely you will be treated in kind. The Rio Dell Police are some of the most animal friendly, helpful, community oriented police I've known and the people of Rio Dell, conservative and liberal support them 100%.

The employees are just like any other city building, professional but minimal when it comes to their work and your needs. They do their jobs but don't expect them to reach for that "extra mile". If you have a concern, be sure to have all your facts and homework/investigative self reports complete in order to get answers to the questions you want; otherwise you'll get plain view "computer screen" answers.
Great town though. I've always felt safe.
