Avoid Allworth/Ascensus if Possible.

I would award this company zero stars if it were possible. If you can do so, you should avoid Allworth for any investments. Service from Allworth is no more than “adequate” and often downright useless and Ascensus is even worse, if possible.

My retirement account was set up by my employer using Allworth/Ascensus, so I had no choice in working with these companies.

Allworth apparently does not offer any bookkeeping or custodial services, only financial “advice”. All the statements and accounts were handled first via a group called Newport, which was later absorbed by Ascensus.

So, if I had a question on anything about my account, other than in what Allworth thought I should be investing, the questions had to go to Ascensus. The Allworth representative was fairly responsive but largely useless, the answer to every question was “you have to call Ascensus”.

I never had less than a 45 minute wait on hold to get Ascensus on the line, then after describing my question, being told “Oh, you are a Newport account, you have to call Newport”. Another 45 minutes. It took weeks to sort out who to contact, what forms and signatures were needed and what other tasks were required to move my accrued retirement to another custodian. People at Ascensus would say one thing and provide one form, and Newport would say another and provide a different form.

Over my 40 year plus career, I have had retirement investment accounts with all the major investment companies, and have never had such terrible service as I have received from Allworth-Ascensus-Newport, or whatever they are called this week. I have never been happier than to get my money repatriated to a professional custodial firm.
