I had a severe compression fracture after having my twins and I could barely walk and was constantly in pain, they told me to wait a year and see how it went because apparently I needed to take care of my twins with a broken spine.

In June of this year, I had an accident at work that caused my L5-S1 disc to rupture and press against the sciatic nerves. With pain from my hips to the bottom of my feet, I made my way to the Providence Hospital ER. Once there, they got me to an exam room almost right away. After the initial contact with emergency room staff, I was taken to MRI. When I returned, the doctor explained what he saw and that I would be a guest for a few days and headed to surgery within the hour. Dr. He would be my surgeon.
When I woke up the next day, I didn't feel anything except for the normal surgery pain! I felt like I could touch my toes again, so (much to my nurses "horror") I tried slowly and succeeded!

Thank you, Dr. He! I cannot find the words to tell you how grateful I am for you and your staff! You saved me from continuing to be in pain and possibly being in a wheelchair for the remainder of my life!

With their friendly and great service, I felt so happy especially being new to Alaska and having an appointment with your office for the first time. Dr. Erik Kussro was a fantastic doctor!! He was very thorough, very considerate and helpful in explaining everything about my procedure. Most doctors I see will do a quick assessment and send you on your way but Erik went above and beyond, he spent time with me and answered all my questions which alleviated all my concerns. He made me feel at ease with my procedure.

Dr. Bales, along with his PA and the entire Anchorage NeuroSurgical support staff are amazing! We have had amazing experiences with multiple family members needing neurosurgery. Definitely the best group of docs I have found in Alaska! I highly recommend any doc in their group. Dr. Bales was my third opinion on an “urgent” neurosurgery. He was the first of three neurosurgeons who actually walked me through the recovery process, and informed me that previous doctors, were over selling the surgery. Based on my incredibly complex medical conditions he encouraged me to wait and he would re-order imaging in a few months. I appreciated his Direct approach and willingness to explain how rough recovery was going to actually be, plus the guarantees from others telling me I would be getting my lower body function back may NOT actually happen. He walked me through all the pros and cons based on my medical history and genetic results. Amazing doctor all around!!
