We first encountered Bernicke when attending a dinner presentation and were interested in working with someone to help us plan for our retirement in the next few years. This meeting led to 3 more meetings over the course of several weeks, however, in the end, we did not feel confident enough to go ahead and work with them. Firstly, the positives: Lindsey and Billy took time to get to know us as people, and were always friendly and welcoming. They gave us plenty of time in our appointments and listened to our goals and plans. Ahead of our first in person appointment, we emailed a detailed report of our current financial information, pensions, etc. When we got to the second meeting, it was clear our report had not been read correctly, so that made a big difference to the model Lindsey was putting before us. (We clearly noted one future pension income to be 'annual' and they calculated based on the same amount, but as 'monthly'). The meeting was curtailed because of this and we set up a third meeting. At that meeting, we were leaning heavily towards signing up with Bernicke, assuming the previous error was a one off blip. During the meeting, we asked some questions about data that might be available to show how Bernicke performs in wealth management, given that of course we would be paying an annual sum for their expertise in overseeing our retirement planning. We were surprised to find they don't have any data available to share, although other companies we had researched do offer this. We were still leaning towards hiring them, despite this slight concern. On returning home and reading through our notes and the subsequent notes they emailed from that meeting, we noticed another error they had made in an assumption that was completely opposite to what we had initially written to them in our first email. This, again, made a difference to the model and made us pause in our thoughts of whether to go with them. We contacted Billy and he had Lindsey email us after the holiday, however, during that period, we lost confidence in their ability to be accurate. We are very detail oriented and accuracy is important to us, so this was not something we could overlook. It was disappointing not being able to go ahead, as they were definitely our top choice from the beginning, but the errors they made in the initial phase of preparing a model for us meant we could not trust that these were isolated cases and made us concerned that errors would continue if we were to sign up. We had no problem at all with them as individuals, they worked hard to get to know us and understand our plans for retirement, and had they not made this errors (or 'misunderstandings' as I believe they put it), we would likely have signed up with them.
