I had a rather disappointing experience. I applied for a loan directly and was informed over the phone that setting up direct deposit would lower my rate by one percentage point. Since we were in a bit of a time crunch, we opted to secure the loan through our dealership, which also works with Coosa Valley. However, we discovered that the rates WERE different. Apparently, the rates advertised on the website that require direct deposit are a new policy, but the dealership’s system doesn’t account for this discount.

Even the finance manager was unaware of this change and mentioned that the dealership owner is on the credit union’s board. When I raised the issue with the credit union regarding this unexpected change and what felt like false advertising, I was told there was nothing they could do. They suggested I refinance after 90 days to take advantage of the discount. No thanks—I’ll just stick with my own credit union instead of dealing with this bait-and-switch approach.

Unfortunately, you’ve lost me as both a business banking customer and a personal one.

Back in December, we attempted to cash in on our home equity by means of a HELOC (home equity line of credit).

While at UGA studying for my Masters Degree, one of the interesting strategies I learned was that a HELOC can be implemented as an effective means for an emergency fund for one’s family. So, aside from being able to borrow low interest money to pay off high interest debt (credit cards, for example), we would have it available for an emergency fund in the event that we experienced a sudden loss of income or an unexpected large expense.

NOTE: I’m intentionally leaving out the name of the local credit union we decided to use.

Long story short, after paying for TWO appraisals (almost $1k) and several weeks of back-and-forth with our loan officer, I found myself on the phone with the VP of lending for the unnamed credit union. He told me, essentially, that while they had the ability to provide the HELOC for us under the terms that we desired, they were unwilling to do so…

The Weeds: Basically, their standard underwriting processes required an extremely strict and overly conservative approach to recognizing/calculating self-employment income. In addition, they had a self-imposed limit of trading only 4 credit lines out in calculating DTI. In other words, while I maybe planned to pay off, for example, 8 credit cards… They only allowed me to eliminate 4 of the current credit card payments from the monthly debt-to-income ratio calculations.

Talk about feeling like a loser… They basically raped us of $1k right at Christmas time and left us hanging high and dry. I thought it was just a by-product of being self-employed and trying to borrow money. So, we did our best and we moved forward.

Fast forward to about a month ago. My friend, Kirby Raburn, asked me to sit down with her and a colleague from Coosa Valley Credit Union to discuss some strategies for growing their presence in the Paulding County market and developing a potential relationship with me and other real estate professionals in the community. While talking, I mentioned my experience with attempting to get a HELOC in December and the ridiculous underwriting practices of the unnamed credit union (I mentioned the name to them). They were quick to assure me that, frankly, they didn’t share the same practices… So, I agreed to submit the application and see what happens.

I did that late Friday, August 29th.

Last Tuesday (day after Labor Day), I got a call before lunch whereby the underwriter for Coosa Valley stated, “I’d do this loan all day long. I don’t know what [unnamed credit union] was thinking. We don’t even have to control funding on this. You can have the HELOC on top of all of your current debt — no problem.”

It was that easy… They had the file to their underwriter for review within an hour of opening up following a holiday and had me approved before lunch — with the only condition being an appraisal…

So, there you have it. We were cleared to close on Wednesday 9/10 and closed on our HELOC yesterday 9/11 — just 10 days from the time they reviewed the application until closing. I’m working on what high-interest debts I plan to payoff next week as we speak!

If you are looking for a credit union to do a HELOC, Coosa Valley Credit Union is the ONLY place to consider… Take it from me…

Oh, and we are dipping out on that cheap popsicle stand of a credit union that raped me last Christmas and I’m moving all of my personal and business banking accounts to CVCU. ✌🏻

Getting my first car loan outside of dealership preferred list of financing companies was a great decision, and choosing Coosa Valley Credit Union has been the best part of the process. They made obtaining the loan straightforward and offered the best interest rate in town. Even the dealership praised their prompt and efficient process. I worked with Noah at the Seven Hills location—he is an amazing person, easy to talk to, and very knowledgeable. Coosa Valley is truly helping their neighbors!

Respectfully,
