You can see their reviews are either 5 star or 1, and the reason is simple. In person they are fantastic. Meanwhile their 800 number has not once ever fixed a problem or given me useful information. They have been rude (I got an apology from the head of their customer service division who listened to the tapes.) I think they would be better to just close their 800 number. And if doesn't help that they route the calls to the branch office to the 800 number. It gives you false hope. Problem for me is it's an hour roundtrip and it would be just so much simpler if you COULD get help by phone. I also had to switch most of my billpay away from them as there were so many problems with my payments arriving. Problems that don't exist with my new banks billpay.

Customer service was great- I was greeted upon my arrival and serviced by Ralph Martinez- an amazing banker. He was professional and very customer-oriented. I was able to obtain a car loan within the same day. none of my other major banks checked all the boxes like VACU. Thank you!

I’ve been a member for a long time here and I loved it at first until recently. I have a bill come out that I didn’t know about and then my account is in negative -$5. Ok I see it then instantly move money over then HOURS later after my account is in the green I get hit with their ridiculous late fee of $35 and I’ve been charged twice a day for their late fees so one day $70!!!!! That’s crazy. I understand charging a late fee the following day but good grief... & Trying to call anyone is like pulling teeth. I’m making the move and switching.

VACU customer service has tanked in the recent years. I pulled my credit card and bank accounts from there today because I simply will not stand for terrible service. Good Luck, you'll need it!

I called 2 times to dispute a charge that was supposed to be a pending charge as a deposit but was actually charged to my account. I called the hotel to which it was charged and kept on getting a different date that she would be back in the office, 3 different days. I disputed the charge and when the customer service asked me if I contacted the hotel I told them what I just explained. I called today and the agent told me they would reach out and still have not?told me I would receive a call back and still have not received a call back when I originally called it was a weekend so I understand but it's Tuesday and still haven't heard anything? I guess I'm just out $150 and I don't understand why they can't tell me on the phone and have to wait for someone to call me back?

tl;dr: Service was slow, was hammered by hidden fees and not informed of certain practices that ended up costing me more than other banks would have.

I can't recommend this bank to anyone. I'm new to the area and got a HELOC from them to make some improvements to my house. The application process was incredibly slow and my processor rarely contacted me during the application. I had to constantly call them to check status and provide more and more documentation. They took so long that some of the paperwork I gave them was no longer viable within their timeframes. Normal HELOCs have you pay interest only payments until the draw period is over. VCU makes you start paying on the principal right away, plus interest which made my monthly payment go from an estimated $150-200, to $850 a month. Also getting hit with monthly $50 finance charges. I can't wait to pay off my HELOC so I don't have to deal with them ever again.

I contacted VCUnion last year to take advantage of the incredibly low mortgage rates. They denied me refinance even though the new rates would have only been $60 more than I was already paying (wanted to go to a 15 year). They denied me AFTER charging me $450 to have an inspector come out. This really ticked me off, and goes to show that these people are NOT willing to work with those of us who own small (yet successful) businesses

Been with VACU since 1987. Absolutely do not recommend VACU mortgage. Poor customer service. Every year I have to spend hours to renew my home insurance. Never had this issue with previous lenders.
